Life's Philosophy

“The brave man is not he who feels no fear, For that were stupid and irrational; But he, whose noble soul its fear subdues, And bravely dares the danger nature shrinks from”- Joanna Baille

There are many types of courage, courage being brave spirit or conduct; valor. From little things to life saving acts everyone wants to be courageous. But what is courage? Hollywood has shown many "courageous acts" in their movies. From standing up against racism and giving one's life to save someone else, courage has been shown through the movie screens. But when asked no one can honestly say this is courage or that person is brave. Some would say courage is the absence of fear; others that courage is doing what has to be done even when faced with your greatest fear. Some would even say that courage is stupidity mixed with a bit of good luck.
To help us define courage let's analyze some soured from well known people and some courageous acts throughout history.

"True bavery is shown by performing without witness what one might be capable of doing before all the world."- Francois de la Rochefoucauld. In other words bravery is doing the right thing when no one is watching.
"When Their adventures do not succeed, however they run away; but it was the mark of a brave man to face things that are, and seem, terrible for a man, because it is noble to do so and disgraceful not to do so."-Aristotle. Simply put Aristotle is saying one is brae because it is te right thing to do and to not do it would be cowardice.
Now let's look at some brave people and acts:
Rosa Parks
1913-2005
1943-joined NAACP
Act of Courage:
1955- refused to give up her bus seat to a white man. She is arrested and spends one night in jail. Later she helps Martin Luther King Jr. and a few others organize a bus boycott.
This act of courage helped the African Americans gain their rifts. Nine years later in 1964 the Civil Rights Act was passed by Congress.

Corporal Jonathan Yale and Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter
22 and 20
On tour in Iraq in 2008:
Act of Courage:
April 22,2008 assigned to guard the main gate  to Joint Security Station Nassar in Ramandi, Iraq. It was a make shift barracks housing about 50 Marines. In the early morning hours a large truck comes barreling towards the gate. The Iraqi police officers, who had also been assigned guard duty, scattered as soon as they saw the driver had no intention of stopping. The two Marines stood their ground and opened fire on the truck. They successful stopped the truck from entering the compound, but were both killed when the truck exploded.
This act of courage saved the aprox. 50 Marines in the compound.
What the definition of courag is is really up to you. So what is courage?
